Hungerford Lake

Hungerford Lake Recreation Area is a multiple-use area.  In spring, summer, and fall, you may enjoy hiking, horseback riding, canoeing, fishing and mountain biking.  During the winter months, the trail is a popular cross-country ski trail.

LOCATION

The Hungerford Lake Recreation Area is located in Newaygo County, Michigan.  The nearest community is Big Rapids, about 7 miles east.

ACCESS

From White Cloud, take M-20 east 17 miles to Norwich Twn Hall, then north on Cypress Avenue 1/2 mile to the cemetery.   Turn east and go 1/2 mile on Hungerford Lake Road, then turn north on Forest Road 5134 for 1/4 mile to trailhead on left.

SEASON

The Hungerford Lake Recreation Area is open to the public year-round.

FEES

There are no fees required to use the area.

CONSIDERATIONS

  • NOTICE:  Pending regulations may prohibit gas combustion engines on the lake.

  • Light blue, diamond shaped confidence markers on trailside trees and posts designate the trail system.  Level of difficulty signs are posted at trailhead and along the trail systems: (Beginner - Intermediate - Advanced)

  • A "You are here" map and benches are located at trail intersections.

  • To avoid resource damage, camping is allowed at numbered sites only.  Camping at this site is limited to 14 consecutive days.  Water is not available and there are no garbage facilities.

  • Care should be taken to keep the area clean and in the condition it was found, so visitors are asked to please pack out what they pack in.  Trail users are asked to leave no trace of their visit.
